Base Oils are important basic raw materials for any lubricants, engine oils, industrial oils, metal working fluids, Hydraulic oils & greases. Base oil is produced by means of refining crude oil. In most of the lubricants 70-90% ingredient is base oils. As per The American Petroleum Institute (API) classification base oils can be grouped majorly into five groups,.i.e Group I/II/III/IV/V.

The base oil characteristics are very important in determining the quality of the finished product. Different products require different compositions and properties in the oil. One of the most important factors is the liquid’s viscosity at various temperatures.

BASE OIL GROUPS

Group I: The least refined type, It usually consists of conventional petroleum base oils.
Group II: A better grade of base oil, this is partially produced by Hydrocracking. All impurities are removed from the oil leading to clearer color.
Group III: Also called Synthetic oil, this is the best grade of petroleum base oil produced by Hydrocracking, Hydroisomerization, and Hydrotreating, which make these oils purer.
